Globus Metal Powders

Our Lab

At Globus Metal Powders, our in-house laboratory is central to delivering the quality, precision, and reliability that define our products. Every batch is backed by rigorous scientific testing and characterisation, ensuring that the powders our customers receive behave exactly as their processes demand. Serving aerospace, defence, energy, marine, and automotive industries, our lab underpins the production of our ultra-low oxygen powders, bespoke alloy designs, and powders optimised for particle size distribution (PSD), density, morphology, and flow behaviour. This ensures predictable, high-performance results in PM-HIP, additive manufacturing, metal injection moulding, and thermal spray applications.

We don’t just meet specifications, we verify performance, consistency, and confidence, batch after batch.

ANALYTICAL CAPABILITIES

Our analytical capabilities focus on comprehensive, internal verification using advanced instrumentation:

  • LECO analysers (O, N, C, S) provide precise gas and impurity measurements, ensuring powders achieve ultra-low oxygen and nitrogen levels. This minimises oxide films, internal voids, and other defects during consolidation or additive manufacturing.
  • Hitachi XRF provides rapid alloy chemistry analysis, offering an indication that compositions are in line with customer requirements and specification limits.
  • Particle characterisation tools, including Malvern laser diffraction and sieve analysis, provide detailed PSD profiles for optimal spreadability, melting behaviour, and layer uniformity.
  • Flow and density testing, including Hall Flowmeter, Apparent Density, and Tap Density (ASTM methods), verifies how powders move, pack, and behave in real-world conditions, ensuring smooth handling across AM, PM, and coating processes.
  • Microstructure and metallography, using mounted and polished samples analysed under our Nikon optical microscope, reveal internal structure, porosity, homogeneity, and build integrity – linking powder characteristics directly to component performance.
  • Phenom Desktop SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) with integrated EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) enhances our analytical capability by providing high-resolution imaging of powder particles at micro and nano scale, alongside elemental analysis at specific points or mapped areas. This enables detailed assessment of particle morphology, surface texture, satellite formation, contamination, fracture surfaces, and elemental distribution beyond the limits of optical microscopy. The addition of EDS allows us to rapidly identify inclusions, verify localised chemistry, investigate anomalies, and support failure analysis with compositional evidence. For our customers, this means deeper insight into powder behaviour during spreading, melting, and consolidation, providing greater confidence that chemistry and cleanliness are not just specified, but visually and analytically verified. For Globus, it strengthens our ability to optimise atomisation parameters, refine alloy development, validate powder purity, and troubleshoot application-specific challenges with enhanced precision and speed. The addition of SEM-EDS capability further reinforces our commitment to scientific rigour, accelerated development cycles, and data-driven performance assurance.

Real-World Validation and Additive Testing

A distinguishing capability within our laboratory is our Renishaw RenAM 400 3D metal printer, enabling us to manufacture test specimens directly from our powders. This allows our team to assess properties such as strength, durability, and structural integrity under real build conditions. Supported by in-house heat treatment, we can close the loop between:

powder → process → performance → refinement

This cycle is critical for alloy development, bespoke powder design, and process optimisation, ensuring that powders do not simply meet chemical specifications, but perform reliably in practice.

Real-World Validation and Additive Testing

Quality, Control, and Traceability

All laboratory work is conducted under strict contamination-controlled conditions to preserve ultra-low oxygen content and powder integrity. Each sample tested is fully documented and stored for 5 years, in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Why It Matters

Every test we run is about reducing customer risk and improving performance outcomes. With cutting-edge instrumentation, real-world validation, and deep metallurgical expertise, the Globus lab ensures every powder leaving our facility is optimised for purity, consistency, and performance ready to support your next breakthrough.
