Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel Powder for High Strength and Corrosion Resistance

GMP® 17-4PH™ from Globus Metal Powders is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel powder engineered for high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and superior toughness. Produced via argon inert gas atomisation, this powder features ultra-low oxygen content, tightly controlled minor elements, and optimised spherical particle morphology, making it suitable for PM-HIP, additive manufacturing (AM), and metal injection moulding (MIM). 

17-4PH™ is widely used in aerospace, defence, oil & gas, and chemical processing, where components demand high mechanical performance combined with resistance to corrosion. Its precipitation-hardening capability allows controlled ageing treatments, achieving precise mechanical properties tailored to specific applications. 

Differentiation

When compared to other Globus powders: 

• Versus nickel superalloys (718, 625, Alloy X, 939): 17-4PH is optimised for moderate temperature high-strength and corrosion resistance, whereas superalloys are selected for extreme high-temperature performance, creep, and fatigue life. 

• Versus stainless steels (316L, F53): While 316L prioritises general corrosion resistance and F53 enhances chloride stress corrosion resistance, 17-4PH provides high-strength, hardenable properties with balanced corrosion performance, making it ideal for structural components requiring load-bearing capability. 

• Versus ferritic-martensitic steels (P91, EUROFER97): P91 and EUROFER97 excel in high-temperature creep and structural stability, while 17-4PH delivers precipitation-hardened strength at moderate temperatures. 

• Versus Invar 36: Invar is designed for low thermal expansion, whereas 17-4PH focuses on mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. 

GMP® ultra-low oxygen powders with tightly controlled minor elements minimise oxide inclusions and internal voids, critical for high-density PM-HIP consolidation and defect-free additive manufacturing builds. The spherical particle morphology and optimised PSD ensure predictable flow, uniform packing, and consistent layer deposition.
