GMP® 316L™

Austenitic Stainless Steel Powder for Corrosion Resistance and Versatility

GMP® 316L™ from Globus Metal Powders is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel powder engineered for excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical performance, and chemical stability. Produced via argon inert gas atomisation, this powder features ultra-low oxygen content, tightly controlled minor elements, and optimised spherical particle morphology, making it ideal for PM-HIP, additive manufacturing (AM), metal injection moulding (MIM), and thermal spray applications. 

316L™ is widely used in marine, chemical, pharmaceutical, and food-processing industries, where components are exposed to corrosive environments, elevated temperatures, and cyclic loading. Its low carbon content minimises sensitisation and intergranular corrosion, ensuring long-term durability and component reliability. 

Differentiation

Compared to other powders in the Globus portfolio: 

  • Versus nickel superalloys (718, 625, Alloy X, 939): 316L prioritises corrosion resistance and chemical stability, whereas the superalloys focus on high-temperature strength, creep, and oxidation performance. 
  • Versus Invar 36: Invar provides dimensional stability under thermal cycling, while 316L offers corrosion resistance in aqueous and aggressive chemical environments. 
  • Versus other stainless/ferritic steels (F53, P91, EUROFER97): 316L is more versatile for general-purpose corrosion resistance, whereas F53 provides enhanced resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, P91 is designed for high-temperature ferritic performance, and EUROFER97 is tailored for nuclear applications. 

 

GMP® ultra-low oxygen powders with tightly controlled minor elements reduce oxide inclusions and internal voids, essential for consistent PM-HIP densification and defect-free additive manufacturing builds. The spherical particle morphology and optimised particle size distribution (PSD) ensure predictable flow, uniform packing, and reliable layer deposition for high-performance components.
