Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel Powder for High Strength and Corrosion Resistance

GMP® 13-8Mo™ from Globus Metal Powders is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel powder optimised for exceptional mechanical strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, particularly in structural, aerospace, and defence applications. Produced via argon inert gas atomisation, this powder features ultra-low oxygen content, tightly controlled minor elements, and spherical particle morphology, making it ideal for PM-HIP, additive manufacturing (AM), and metal injection moulding (MIM). 

13-8Mo™ is designed for high-performance components that require reliable strength and durability under cyclical and moderate-temperature conditions. Its chemistry allows precise precipitation-hardening through controlled ageing, enabling customisation of mechanical properties to suit specific component requirements. 

Differentiation

Across the Globus portfolio: 

  • Versus 17-4PH™ and 15-5PH™: 13-8Mo™ offers higher strength and improved fatigue resistance, particularly in applications where reduced thermal distortion and dimensional stability are required. In contrast, 17-4PH™ prioritises balanced strength and corrosion resistance, and 15-5PH™ emphasises enhanced corrosion resistance and toughness. 
  • Versus nickel superalloys (718™, 625™, Alloy X™, 939™): While 13-8Mo™ provides high-strength, medium-temperature performance, nickel superalloys are selected for extreme high-temperature, creep, and oxidation resistance. 
  • Versus stainless steels (316L™, F53™): 316L focuses on general corrosion resistance, F53™ on chloride stress corrosion, and 13-8Mo delivers high-strength, precipitation-hardened performance with reliable corrosion resistance. 
  • Versus ferritic-martensitic steels (P91™, EUROFER97™): P91™ and EUROFER97™ excel at high-temperature structural stability, while 13-8Mo™ is designed for moderate temperature, load-bearing applications. 
  • Versus Invar 36™: Invar prioritises low thermal expansion, whereas 13-8Mo™ focuses on strength, fatigue resistance, and corrosion performance. 

 

GMP® ultra-low oxygen powders with tightly controlled minor elements minimise oxide inclusions, internal voids, and microstructural defects, ensuring reliable PM-HIP consolidation and defect-free additive manufacturing builds.
