Globus Metal Powders

High-Purity Metal Powders for Precision and Repair in Directed Energy Deposition

Directed Energy Deposition (DED) is an advanced additive manufacturing (AM) process used to build, repair, or enhance metal components by melting powder or wire feedstock with a focused energy source, typically a laser, electron beam, or plasma arc. The process enables the targeted addition of material directly onto existing parts or substrates, offering exceptional design freedom, material efficiency, and the capability to restore or modify high-value components.

In DED, metal powder is delivered through a coaxial or side-fed nozzle directly into the melt pool, where it is fused onto the workpiece surface. The quality and consistency of the powder feed are critical to achieving uniform deposition, stable melt pool dynamics, and defect-free consolidate on.

Globus Metal Powders provides ultra-clean, spherical, and flow-optimised powders that enable precise powder flow control, consistent energy absorption, and predictable metallurgical performance, even in multi-material builds or large-scale repair operations.

ADVANTAGES OF GLOBUS POWDERS IN DED

1. Optimised Flowability and Powder Feeding

  • DED requires controlled powder flow rates to maintain consistent bead geometry and layer quality.
  • Globus powders feature spherical morphology and narrow particle size distribution, ensuring stable feeding and precise deposition, even in complex geometries or off axis builds.

2. Ultra-Low Oxygen and Contamination Control

  • DED is highly sensitive to oxygen and cross-contamination, which can introduce oxides or inclusions into the melt pool.
  • Globus powders are produced under strict contamination-controlled conditions, maintaining ultra-low oxygen levels for clean, fully dense deposits and enhanced mechanical performance.

3. Superior Metallurgical Bonding and Microstructural Uniformity

  • Consistent particle chemistry and purity promote strong adhesion between layers and with the substrate.
  • Enables the formation of homogeneous, fine-grained microstructures with minimal defects or porosity.

4. Enhanced Process Efficiency and Reliability

  • Uniform particle size supports predictable melting behaviour, minimising spatter, porosity, or incomplete fusion.
  • Improved deposition efficiency translates to faster build rates and reduced post-processing requirements.

5. Batch Consistency and Traceability

  • Globus maintains rigorous process control and batch documentation, ensuring consistent performance and repeatable outcomes across all production runs.

APPLICATIONS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

DED is ideal for high-value manufacturing and component repair in sectors where material integrity and dimensional precision are critical:
  • Aerospace: repair and refurbishment of turbine blades, structural reinforcements, and large titanium or nickel-based components.
  • Energy & Power Generation: restoration of worn parts, addition of erosion- or corrosion-resistant layers, and build-up of pressure vessel features.
  • Defence & Marine: rapid repair of mission-critical components and deposition of hardfacing materials for wear resistance.
  • Tooling and Moulds: application of wear-resistant or high-hardness coatings to extend tool life.

Globus powders provide the stability, purity, and performance needed to ensure reliable deposition, strong bonding, and long-term durability in every application.
